In my eighth year of white-knuckle sobriety (a term used when one struggles to stay sober) I moved from Detroit, Michigan to Eureka, Northern California to recuperate from an auto accident.

As part of my retraining, California Social Services Vocational Rehab sent me to a school beneath the giant redwood trees known as the "heartwoods."  After my first semester, I settled into an academic awakening and began rebuilding my life.

Attending college in my mid-50s was a major turning point for me. Much to my amazement, while studying social science of addiction in Chemical Dependency Family Counseling, I made President’s Honor Roll, National Dean’s List, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and in May 1997 graduated with highest honors.

With a better understanding of an alcoholic’s abnormal behavior, I now hold a California State Certificate of Achievement in Chemical Dependency Family Counseling, with 22 years of public speaking on alcohol recovery. My books tell the story of how I got sober and stayed that way.

Prior to this time I hadn't taken hold of the wondrous gift of those who had reached out to help me get sober and stay that way.

Dedicated to helping others get sober is my primary goal and it has guided me into a fruitful, more rewarding life.

For there, amid the giant Redwood Groves of Northern California...  the tallest trees in the world... surely one of God's cathedrals...  I truly became a brand new Heartwood Creation.
